Check Your Roof With hurricane season in full swing, it's a good idea to check your roof for leaks before it's too late.
Here are 3 easy ways to check your roof for leaks:
Do a Spot Check
The first step in locating potential leaks is to spot check the walls and ceilings in every room of your home. Look for things like water stains/spots, bulging areas of paint, and musty odors. Don't forget to check the insides of closets as well.
Check the Outside
After you finish checking the inside, it's time to check the outside. From the ground, check your roof for any missing shinlges, as well as any shingles that may be buckling (typcially in the middle) or curling (typcially at the corners).
Check Your Attic/Storage Space
Go up into your attic and look for black marks, mold, or water stains/spots. Since light can be reflected off water, it's a good idea to bring a flashlight to make it easier to see. If you can get into your attic while it's raining, look for any water drips coming through. If it's not raining, enlist the help of a spouse or friend to pass water from the garden hose along your roof while you are inside, looking for water dripping through.
Identifying the signs of a roof leak early on can help avoid extensive and costly damage. If a roof leak is left untreated, the impact can be devastating.
